Coffee and Viz – Seeing with Your Ears: Exploring Data with Musical Sound

February 22, 2019 - 9:30 am - 10:30 am

  • EVENT DESCRIPTION: Sonification is an emerging area of informatics wherein datasets are made available to visually impaired researchers. As a field, it is gaining traction for a number of reasons, including accessibility and the possibility for new insights gained due to the ear’s strength at pattern recognition. In this talk, Mark Ballora, professor of Music Technology at Penn State, will go over principles of how to represent information with sound, as well as give examples of work that he has done with researchers in a variety of areas, including cosmology, cardiology, meteorology, and marine biology.
  • CONTACT INFORMATION: Walt Gurley – 919-515-8822 or jwgurley@ncsu.edu
  • ADMISSION INFORMATION: Free and open to the public.
